Coming Home at The Thrive Archive

Posted on September 29, 2014

‘Coming Home’ is a pilot project that has been funded by Enterprise Music Scotland. Mike Vass has been commissioned to write a new piece of music inspired by photographs taken by Ian Paterson and John Maher of abandoned croft houses in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. The commission is also sponsored by Edinburgh Youth Gaitherin enabling their Big Band to be part of the development of the commission and I am working with Charlotte Hathaway of Unroofed Records to integrate art and performance. Whilst John and Ian’s exhibition ‘Leaving Home‘ in 2013 was the inspiration for the project Ian has now started a new Coming Home portrait project in response to Mike’s musical commission.  This is a great example of collaborative arts practice in motion so watch this space!  Session 2, at Summerhall yesterday welcomed Roxana Vilk of GOLtheband and we heard Roxana’s moving response to the project’s three questions:

What does coming home mean to you?

How does leaving home make you feel?

What makes Scotland feel like home? You can follow the project at The Thrive Archive on Facebook.
